BUZZ: Sony's unnatural obsession with the number 599

Just days after the announcement that Sony is slashing prices on the 60GB PS3 to $499 comes the revelation that the $499 PS3 is being discontinued, confirmed by Sony's Kaz Hirai. The $499 unit will be replaced with the lone 80GB, $599 model when supplies of the $499 model run out.
So, how long will that be? Sony says there are supplies to last "into the foreseeable future". Dave Karraker of Sony Computer Entertainment America says that this means "several months to come."
What seemed like a price cut now seems like Sony attempting to cling to the $599 price by any means necessary. An extra 20GB of hard drive space is not going to convince those for whom $599 is too much. Can anyone see their logic here?
