BUZZ: Blizzard working on game that isn't StarCraft II

Blizzard's Frank Pearce dropped a bombshell during an interview with Gamasutra, letting slip that Blizzard has another game in development in addition to StarCraft II during a discussion about Blizzard's workforce.

"Our global headcount is 2,700," said Pearce, "And most of that is customer service for World of Warcraft! In terms of development staff it’s probably around 350. World of Warcraft is about 135 people, 40 for Starcraft II, 40 for team 3, our cinematics team is about 85 guys. Then there’s sound and Q/A and that sort of thing."

When pressed for details regarding the new project, Pearce was cagey. "Team 3 is working on something really awesome. I can’t give you any hints, but it’s totally awesome."
Diablo III? A new MMO? We can only know one thing for sure: it's probably going to make a lot of money.

BUZZ: Sony's unnatural obsession with the number 599

Just days after the announcement that Sony is slashing prices on the 60GB PS3 to $499 comes the revelation that the $499 PS3 is being discontinued, confirmed by Sony's Kaz Hirai. The $499 unit will be replaced with the lone 80GB, $599 model when supplies of the $499 model run out.

So, how long will that be? Sony says there are supplies to last "into the foreseeable future". Dave Karraker of Sony Computer Entertainment America says that this means "several months to come."

What seemed like a price cut now seems like Sony attempting to cling to the $599 price by any means necessary. An extra 20GB of hard drive space is not going to convince those for whom $599 is too much. Can anyone see their logic here?

BUZZ: Class-action Xbox 360 lawsuit numero uno

The most surprising thing about this is that Microsoft is being taken to court over an issue that isn't the red ring of death. This one, strangely enough, is about disc scratching during the "reasonable, foreseeable, normal and intended use" of game discs.

Those who've brought the matter to court are seeking 5 million dollars from Microsoft. It's chump change for the company, but that's a whole lot of compensation for a few scratched discs. I must admit to having had a fleeting desire to take a sharp implement to my DVD collection and blame it on Sony.

BUZZ: Sony fesses up

Sony has officially announced it will be selling the 60GB PS3 at $499 and an 80GB counterpart in August at $599. Seems like Sony thought the appropriate course of action was to deny deny deny until the press release hit media inboxes. It just makes those responsible for the price cut look reactionary and sly.

The fact that both Sony and Microsoft have announced corrective measures for things gamers weren't happy about (console price and failure rate, respectively) makes it easy to analyze how each company went about things and how each move was received. Microsoft were open and honest about their initiative and announced it as soon as the media cottoned on. Sony played silly buggers and seemingly made the announcement only when forced. On the PR front, Microsoft wins, and it's no mystery why.

In terms of capitalist suaveness Sony really seem to have lost their mojo of late.

BUZZ: Console Concessions

Via a number of sources comes the news that the price of the PS3 is going to drop from $599 to $499 on the 12th of July. I'm not sure how much a price drop from 'really expensive' to 'still really expensive, but less so' is going to change SONY's fortunes, but it's certainly a step in the right direction.

Just as SONY makes that concession comes the news that users who experience the 'red ring of death' on their Xbox 360 console will have their warranty extended to three years.

It's good to see both companies able to bow to public pressure, but is it a case of too little too late?

BUZZ: Racism is everywhere. Even Forza 2.

This 1957 Mercedes 300SL is just one of several vehicles emblazoned with user-designed hate speech available for purchase through Forza 2's online auction mode.

The debate around an appropriate reaction is pretty evenly split between three points of view:

  • This kind of stuff shouldn't make it to auction and the user responsible should be banned.

  • Yeah it's offensive but the user is entitled to their opinion. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

  • Who cares? I'm not pro-Nazi but that's a nice paint-job.
I've been arguing the first case and I'd like to paraphrase some of my comments over at Joystiq to explain why.

Put yourself in the shoes of a Jewish person who's ancestors have been executed during the holocaust. The car would make you feel physically sick with disgust and outrage. Why should such people have to experience that just so some idiot with nothing to contribute to the world can voice his valueless hate speech?

Others have argued that the car should remain on auction because it is an exercise in free speech, which is protected by the Constitution. I disagree. While the Constitution protects you from negative legal consequences for free speech, the speech in question is hate speech. Though the Constitution protects your right to voice hate speech, it does not protect you from legal consequences, and it has the right to protect others from your speech. No government can stop someone from speaking/writing/creating Forza 2 cars, but they can protect others from your hate speech, and they can punish you for it.

From the Hate Speech Wikipedia entry:

"In the United States, government is broadly forbidden by the First Amendment of the Constitution from restricting speech. Jurists generally understand this to mean that the government cannot regulate the content of speech, but that it can address the harmful effects of speech through laws such as those against defamation or incitement to riot."

Better examples would be 'Discrimination' and 'Inciting violence'. The car does both - the first via the racist comments on the other side of the car (not shown in the screenshot), the second via the mention of White power and the Swastika - both symbols which represent violence against a certain group of people.

Those in charge of the online component of Forza 2 have every right (and in my opinion, the responsibility) to remove such cars from the public domain. I think every vehicle design submitted to the public domain should get a quick once-over from a moderator, and be judged according to the relevant section of Microsoft's Live Online User Policy:

“Publish, distribute or disseminate any topic, name, material, file or information that incites discrimination, hate, or violence towards one person or a group because of their race, religion, nationality, transgender status, homosexual status, or HIV/AIDS status, or that insults the victims of crimes against humanity by contesting the existence of those crimes.”

The "incites discrimination, hate, or violence towards one person or a group because of their race" rule is completely violated here. I hope that in future this kind of stuff won't be made available for public viewing.

My views can be summed up with a quote provided by Justhesh, commenting on the Kotaku coverage:

"The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins."
